1. Validation

This programme syllabus was validated by the Faculty Board at Södertörn University on 2009-11-12 according to the stipulations in the Higher Education Ordinance. This programme was revised on 2012-10-29.

2. Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree including 90 credits in Media Technology or equivalent as the main field of study and English B or equivalent

3. Programme outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the programme, the student is able to:

  • identify and apply the key concepts and theoretical framework of interactive media in professional discourse, in particular with respect to the community and collaborative media and gaming

  • interpret design thinking in the broad sense of designing interactions, practices, experiences, community dynamics, knowledge systems and economies

  • evaluate business models of interactive media, in particular, those based on distributed collaboration and sharing of content, source code and innovations.

    Competence and skills

    On completion of the programme, the student is able to:

  • communicate with groups in key roles and professions in interactive media production across disciplinary boundaries

  • manage typical design and development production based on the best practice in the field

  • apply a repertoire of user-oriented and participatory design and development methodologies

  • work effectively both individually and in teams, and master contemporary technologies that facilitate distributed collaboration

  • access research results and conduct research based on best academic practice.

    Judgement and approach

    On completion of the programme, the student is able to:

  • evaluate artifacts and concepts from aesthetical perspectives, usability and ergonomics

  • reflect on the ethnical concerns of gender and minority issues as well as sustainable development in professional practice, and promote inclusive design practices

  • recognise the role and impact of interactive media in the power relations of society, culture, education and the economy

  • identify, reflect and take into account issues of identity, privacy, and security in interactive media design.

  • 4. Applicability

    The students are prepared for positions in industry, public administration and organisations that apply interactive media, nationally and internationally. Having successfully completed this programme, students are well prepared for doctoral studies in multi-disciplinary academic environments focusing on the design of interactive media.

    Qualification stipulation

  • The degree of Master of Science (one year) is awarded on completion of courses equivalent to 60 credits. At least 30 credits must be awarded for courses of depth within the main field of study including a minimum of 15 credits for an independent project. A student must previously have been awarded a degree of Bachelor of Science for courses equivalent to 180 credits.

  • 6. Programme design

    The studies have a multidisciplinary basis and combine characteristics of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Technical Sciences. The course aims to develop advanced skills in interactive media design.
    The studies involve both individual and team work. Concepts, theories, practices and methods for interactive media design are introduced. In addition, the roles of information technology and media and their impacts on society are studied.

    Theoretical and practical skills are practiced and combined in practical projects. Theoretical and methodological courses are integrated in an independent degree project that is expected to result in a scholarly article. Considerable effort is made to improve the students’ communicative ability especially in written and visual form, and to enable them to fully exploit the potential of electronic media.

     A student on a study programme is guaranteed a place on the compulsory courses or on the specializations/courses within the programme. (For entry requirements, see 11, Other Stipulations.)

    8. Optional courses

    To allow for individual skills enhancement, the selection of optional courses offered varies annually. The possibility is also available to include courses offered by curricular partners of the institution, on approval of the programme director.
     A student is guaranteed a place on a range of courses equivalent to a full workload. There is no guarantee that a student is offered a place on his/her first choice of course. For entry requirements, see course syllabus.
